The horsehair process is very similar to the raku process but instead the work is not placed into a trashcan filled with combustibles. After a desired temperature is reached, the work is removed from the kiln and placed onto a stand and individual strands of horse hair are applied one by one. Because the piece is so hot, the coarse hair burns into the surface leaving black squiggly lines and smoke trails. The hotter the temperature, the more irratic and squiggly lines become. As the piece cools down, the lines become straighter and lighter in color until they do not leave a mark at all. The piece is then set aside and allowed to cool down entirely and the residue is washed off and the piece is waxed giving it a shined finish.
